Throwback: Jammin’ with Frank Vignola

Me and Frank Vignola after the concert at the jazz club in Hallsberg , Sweden. It was almost 8 years to the day from when I got to jam with him for the first time.

Back in 2011 i attended a workshop with master jazz guitarist Frank Vignola.

A couple of days after the workshop he was going to play a show not to far from where I live. At the workshop he invited the participants to come to the concert and offered the possibility to jam with him, Vinny Raniolo and Eric Bogart.

I talked to a friend and we decided to drive to the concert. I brought my original fretless Kala spruce ubass and a cord…

In the intermission I approached Frank and told him that I’d like to take him up on the offer to jam. We decided on Fly me to the moon and a blues

Set two starten and I was called up on stage after the second song…

I brought my ubass plugged into the PA and of we went. We had not played a single note prior to this and there was somewhere around 150-200 in the audience probably wondering who that guy was taking the stage.

Fly me to the moon flew bye and Frank started to play the head for C-jam blues and after a somewhat shaky start (on my part) we found a nice groove.

I still love the part where I manage to steer us into half-time mode and the audience starts to clap along. Frank plays a smoking solo, I play a solo and we go into trade mode and finally manage to sync the ending pretty nicely!

This was a great experience and has also been great for my “ubass exposure” on YouTube with around 135.000 views to this day.

Last Saturday Frank played at a nearby jazz club and I went there with a friend. It was a fantastic concert. Frank played with top notch Swedish jazz musicians, Eric Söderlind, guitar, Hans Backenroth, upright bass and Joakim Ekberg, drums.

No jam for me this time but I managed to talk to Mr Vignola for a bit, telling him how fun it was when we jammed and that the video of that firat jam back in 2011 has been great for me. It’s nice to be able to give thanks for these things in person.

The sax and trumpet players from the support band was invited to jam. It’s so nice that Frank still pays-it-forward at his concerts!

New music by Marlowe feat. Solid Body Ubass playing!

My friend Marlowe is a Kala Ukulele Artist that I met in California earlier this year. We decided to do a collab and I recorded overdubs to one of the songs of her brand new album ”Moments”. The song is called Battle Royale and it sure was fun adding ubasses to the track. I decided to play my Kala California custom fretless solid body tuned EADGC.

Now check out the video below and then go to marlowe-official.com and find out more about Marlowe!

Hi,

I’m very exited to finally be able to share this song! I have worked on my album project on and off since 2012 and this tune especially has been very important to me. It has seen its ups and downs, I have had copyright issues and other problems that have delayed the release but now it’s ready to share with you!

First a bit of the back story…

My love for Brazilian music started in the early 90’s. I studied music at different music schools in Sweden and was turned on to the lovely and colorful music of Brazil. The melodies, rhythms and harmony, everything fits together so nicely and makes a music so complete and wonderful to my ears and heart.

In 2010 I got to know Nelson Faria and his family when he first came to Sweden to be a guest professor at the Orebro University. I got to play and study with him and more amazing musicians/teachers from Brazil.

I was the recording engineer of the first Tavares – Faria Duo record ”Na Esquina De Mestre Mignone” that can be found on cdbaby.com. During the recording sessions we had some time left and did a quick recording of one of my favorite Brazilian songs, Dindi. I overdubbed a bass part with my fretless spruce Kala Ubass

I started to record songs in 2012 for my first album featuring my first Kala UBass.
I decided to have jazz and Brazil music as a focus and ”Jag vet att vi ses snart igen/Manhã De Carnaval” is one of the songs I have recorded. I have already pre-released a few other songs from this project on bandcamp.com please go there and have a listen if you haven’t already.

I think the version of ”Jag vet att vi ses snart igen/Manhã De Carnaval” is really special because of the bi-lingual duet I perform with the amazing Brazilian vocalist Ilessi. Please check out her music on Facebook. I met her when she was in Sweden as a part of an exchange program between one of the Universitys in Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) and the University of Orebro here in Sweden. I studied at this University back in the 90’s and have also worked there as a teacher.

Carlos Fuchs and Ilessi during the recording session of the Portuguese vocal parts at Estúdio Tenda da Raposa in Rio de Janeiro.

Illessi recorded her vocal part at Estúdio Tenda da Raposa in Rio de Janeiro engineered by Carlos Fuchs. The rest of the song is recorded here in Sweden by me. Both in my studio and at a friends house. I’m very happy and proud of my fellow musicians in this recording. They have all contributed in such a great and musical way.

Big, big thanks to Ilessi, Tommy, Daniel and Lasse!

I really hope you will love our version and that you can feel the all the love put into this project. I’m so glad it can finally see the light of day!

Please have a look at the video that features this song and feel free to share it around!

The song can be bought at several digital outlets as (Apple iTunes, cdbaby.com, Google Play…) and can also be streamed (Spotify, Tidal, Google Play, Pandora, YouTube Music). Some of these services might not be available in your country but someone of the hopefully will!

New Music and trio featuring the Kala SUB through effect pedals!

Almir, Henrique and me in Brasilia, Brazil (May 2015)

Hi,

In May I visited Brazil for the first time and met a lot of nice people including Henrique and Almir. Read more in this post

Last week we met again…but now in my studio in Sweden! We started to jam and came up with some new music.

One of the things we played was built on two short bass parts (bass bits). It has a very loose form and one version turned out to be 13 minutes!

I used a Kala SUB with the new Kala Metal Round Wound strings. I went back and forth between a dry Ubass sound and a FX chain. This was the FX chain: Kala SUB Solid Body Ubass (with Kala round wound strings) > RMI Basswitch (the built in DI sends the signal to my Apollo Audio Interface) > In the parallel loop I used this chain: Boss OC-2 Octaver > Electro Harmonix BassBalls > Boss SYB-5 Bass Synth controlled by an Boss FV-500L Expression pedal. > Aguilar bass amp (Tone Hammer 500) and cab (SL-112). This time for monitor only.

Below is a link to a shorter version of the jam. (The whole song might be released in the future!)

Hope you like the music the cool sound of the Ubass and of course great playing by Henrique and Almir!

Henrique Alvim, guitar
Almir Cassio, drums
Magnus Sjoquist, Kala SUB

Please check out: Good Harvest – a fantastic duo from Sweden

Good Harvest

Hi,

A while ago the amazingly talented Swedish duo, Good Harvest uploaded a video on their Facebook page.
I have followed Good Harvest for awhile and got to know them when they have played in Orebro, Sweden.

The song is called ”Ukulele man” and I thought… -I’m kind of a ukulele (bass)man! 🙂
I started to jam along and came up with a bass part and a vocal harmony part.
These parts were added to the Facebook video and the result sent to Good Harvest.
They liked it! 🙂 I have already put it on my Facebook page but now it’s also on my YouTube-channel

We have talked about the possibility to record the song together in the future.
Would be very nice!

Hope you will enjoy this!

Jammin’ with my Kala Ubass | 48 ”Regnen i mars” (Àguas de Marcos)

Me, Eva Stenström (vocals) and Daniel Björnmo (guitar)

Hi,

It’s once again time for a jammin’ video. This time a short but fun one!

I have written about the Live at heart festival before and this past September was the fifth one. The festival is inspired by the famous South by southwest festival in Austin, TX (US). The first festival was held in 1987! (Read more here.)

In this years Live at heart 5.0 festival i played with two bands. I wrote about M&M’s Honky Tonk earlier and now it’s time for Eva Stenström LTD. Read more here. I’m working on a album project with Eva Stenström and will release this hopefully during 2015.

The song featured in this video is written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and performed here with the brand new Swedish lyrics by Eva!

We all played through a Bose L1 PA system and I really think the Ubass sounds really good in their systems. First time I wrote about Bose was back in 2011.

Hope you like the short and lively street video of ”Regnen i mars” (The March Rains)!

All the best, Magnus

First single out from my friend Mathias Lilja’s upcoming debut CD!

A trio of basses - all fretless :-) Rob Allen MB-2, my trusty spruce Kala UBass and "Roy" a Czech upright from ca 1950.
A trio of basses – all fretless 🙂 Rob Allen MB-2, my trusty spruce Kala UBass and ”Roy” a Czech upright from ca 1950.

Finally!

I have had the good fortune to play with Mathias (composer, vocals and guitar) and Clas Ohlson (lap steel, steel guitar and guitar) a couple of times in the last few years. The music is really good and it’s sheer joy to play with such great guys as Mathias and Clas!

We did a trio gig before Christmas and it sure was fun! I got to play both Ubass, my Rob Allen MB-2 and upright!
It’s all worth it to drag around a lot of stuff when I get to play wonderful music with great musicians! I sang some backup vocals too which is always fun!

Mathias first solo CD is about to be released this spring. The first single has just been released and I urge you to go to bandcamp.com, listen and BUY it now! You can give it a listen in the player below! Be prepared for some great music and lyrics by Mathias Lilja!

You can pre-order the Mathias Lilja CD here!

Hope I get to play with them soon again!

All the best,
Magnus
